Project location behind the Iron Curtain
This camp will take place in Bratislava formerly Slovak Prešporok. It is the capital of Slovakia and, with a population of about 420,000, the country’s largest city. Bratislava is in southwestern Slovakia, occupying both banks of the Danube River and the left bank of the Morava River. Bordering Austria and Hungary it is the cultural heart of Slovakia. Owing to its historical multi-cultural character, local culture is influenced by various ethnic and religious groups, including Germans, Slovaks, Hungarians, and Jews. Bratislava enjoys numerous theaters, museums, galleries, concert halls, cinemas and clubs.
The dancing club is located in the west part of the city. In the area you can find some of the historical places in Slovakia – for example Devín (Dévény, Theben) which is by far Central European most famous historic site. Famous for the ruins of Devín Castle. It lies on the border between Slovakia and Austria which runs down the middle of the Morava and Danube rivers, and which previously formed part of the Iron Curtain between East and West.
Work
The volunteers will be working in the dance club TK Danube. Most of the work will consist of on integrating the activities of motion-dance and the visual nature of healthy and disabled people (disabled – wheelchair users, mental, hearing, visual and multiple disabilities). The club integrates people with and without disabilities aged from 4 to 60 years. There will be lessons with the dancing teacher in the morning and in the afternoon, after the clients will come the volunteers will help with different tasks.
The purpose of this camp is to involve international volunteers in an experience which will be captured in an unforgettable way using camera. In this camp, volunteers learn together from each other how to better integrate people with disabilities. In the evenings the volunteers will gather together to share experience and the camp will culminate in a dance show.
This work camp is a way to enjoy an amazing time in Slovakia with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge on integration and intercultural learning. So don’t worry if you’re not an experienced dancer or social worker, because the work camp doesn’t require advanced knowledge and it isn’t a competition.
Please note that volunteers need to bring good humor and patience to the work camp. The volunteers should also keep in mind that the camp coordinators will shoot a short documentary movie about the project.
Leisure
Joy’n’Work volunteers have free access to the facilities in the dancing club. Joy’n’Work will also organize reasonably-priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Central Europe has to offer. Excursions include unique sights such as mountains, deep woods, hot-springs, national traditions and funky retro tour in a through places of communist past and recent transformation in Bratislava.
Accommodation and Food
Joy’n’Work volunteers stay in a hostel in a walking distance from the club. Volunteers with wheelchair will stay in the club. No need to bring their own sleeping bag. Free wireless internet is available, but volunteers need to bring their own laptops if they would like to connect to it.
Food will be provided in a canteen for the duration of the work camp. There will be a possibility of barbecue and everyone is expected to do his/her fair share of the cooking/cleaning.
